eGPU, MacOS and Twinmotion

Wed 17 Oct 2018 10:21

So I searched this forum but couldn't really find an answer to my question.
Can I use an eGPU to accelerate rendering on MacOS? And can I select which videocard to use when I render?
Maybe someone has some experience with this setup?

Best,

Peter

Hello Peter,

Yes, eGPU will accelerate Twinmotion renderings on a MacOS version.
You need to have a 2nd screen connected to your mac and Twinmotion will run on the 2nd screen using your eGPU.
You can find more information on this webpage: " Use an external graphics processor with your Mac " https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208544

Kind regards,

Hi Tianxiao,

Thanks for the quick reply, So I can choose per app which GPU I want to use (I'm running Mojave). That is cool!

So now convince my boss to buy one ;-)

Peter

According to Apple's support page you can now accelerate apps on any display connected to the Mac, not just the second display:

Can anybody confirm this is now the case with Twinmotion?

Hi Christiaan,

Yes this works for Twinmotion as well. I have a Razor Core X combined with an AMD Vega 64 and it really helps bringing down rendertimes.
Also the main editor is much smoother and I can use my mac without staggering display in other apps as well while it's rendering.

Unfortunately no Nvidia support for OS X Mojave at the moment so be careful what GPU you choose.

Peter

Thanks Peter. Can you recommend any eGPUs in particular?

Hi, I currently use the Vega 64 from AMD. I know this one is supported by Apple. There is a new one from AMD but I don't know if this one is supported yet.
You could have a look on www.egpu.io which has all kinds of information about videocards and egpus. The best thing about a eGPU is that you can swap out cards once a new/better one is released and immediately take advantage of it without having to buy a new mac where everything is soldered on the motherboard :x

I'm also using a Razer Core X with AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 Graphics Card in Mojave. It works like a charm!

I'm running an iMac. And I'm using the built-in display with no problems. My computer specs are below:

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)
4.2 GHz Intel Core i7
24 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 (I would suggest 32 GB though. I will upgrade soon.)

This is excellent news!

Have purchased and am new to using Twinmotion on my iMac, (exactly the same spec as yours).

Looking to purchase the Razer Core X and AMD Vega 64, and I have a couple of general questions;

1 - Do you have to turn on and off the Razer Core X when shutting down the iMac?
2 - Does it need to be 'ejected' before shutting down the iMac?
3 - Could I also ask which AMD Vega you bought? There are different ones, such as Gigabyte, Sapphire, Asus, Nitro+ I was thinking of the Gigabyte one.

I guess these are a couple of general operational questions really.

Many thanks and kind regards

Mike
