adding materials to a model

Hi guys, i'm new to twinmotion and trying to import a vectorworks model into it to make some renders for my project.
Can anyone explain to me how i maintain the same class heirachy as in vectorworks? i want to add twin motion materials to different parts of my model but it only lets me apply one material to the entire model (interior and exterior) instead of different materials to different objects? do i need to go back to my vectorworks model and define all the different objects by colour? (like in artlantis)
Im currently importing my model as an obj file, and the import works fine, but wondering if there is a better file type because obj doesn't export vectorworks textures?
